Camp Shawu overlooks the Mpanamana Dam in the southern Kruger National Park.
Camp Shawu offers a luxury South African safari experience in the southern section of the Kruger Park. Ten guests can be accommodated in five luxurious rooms that each have a large verandah from which to observe the animals drinking at the nearby Mpanamana Dam.
The luxury open-plan rooms have their own bathrooms, with deep baths and outdoor showers. Relax with a sundowner on the deck or at the swimming pool. A small beauty salon on-site offers pampering treatments to those after even more relaxation. Meals are served in either the indoor or outdoor dining areas, depending on the weather.
Camp Shawu is named after the big elephant bull that roamed the area for 60 years. The rest of the Big Five occur in abundance. Guests may further enhance their safari experience by joining a nighttime game drive or exploring the park themselves during the day. The southern Kruger National Park is well-known for its proliferation of wildlife.
When booking this safari package, guests fly to Nelspruit from O R Tambo International Airport and are transferred to the Shishangeni private concession. Camp Shawu is named after one of the park’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ elephants, Shawu, who sported some of the longest tusks ever recorded. The camp overlooks the Mpanamana Dam, providing a scenic occasion for afternoon sundowners or just relaxing on a deck chair and observing the gathering wildlife - an authentic safari experience.
The camp's location means that the open 4x4 game drives will be rich with South Africa's finest, from the awe-inspiring Big Five to rarer sightings of cheetah and wild dog. Guests may also dig their heels into nature on a guided game walk - the opportunity to experience the bush from up close. When not enjoying safari activities, the sparkling deck pool offers a cool reprieve from summertime hot spells.
Camp Shawu is not among my personal favorite lodges in the southern Kruger National Park. I would recommend considering Lukimbi or Jock Safari Lodge, both of which are also located on private concessions in the southern reaches of park.Read More
