Satara Rest Camp

Kruger National Park | South Africa
Help Me Plan

Open Savanna, Prolific Predators, Effortless Central Access

Satara anchors central Kruger’s open knobthorn–marula savanna, long known for frequent big-cat encounters and large plains-game herds. Expect practical self-catering comfort with a restaurant, shop and a welcome swimming pool, plus SANParks-guided sunrise, sunset and night drives and bush walks. Nearby hides and waterholes add unrushed viewing, and the camp’s waterhole webcam lets you keep an eye on the action even between activities.

Highlights & What to Expect

  • Renowned “cat country” around Satara with regular lion, leopard and cheetah sightings on surrounding routes.
  • Central location with easy access via Orpen Gate; good day loops on basaltic savanna for dense general game.
  • Sweni Bird Hide (near N’wanetsi) and Ratelpan Hide (on the S39) for relaxed birding and mammal viewing.
  • SANParks-led sunrise, sunset and night drives plus guided bush walks bookable at reception.
  • On-site restaurant, take-away and shop; large swimming pool and day-visitor area for downtime.
  • Popular waterhole webcam just outside camp provides continual wildlife action between drives.

Location & Setting

Satara sits in the park’s central sector on gently undulating basalt plains clothed in knobthorn and marula savanna. The open grasslands support abundant grazers, which in turn attract high predator densities, especially lions. Orpen Gate offers straightforward access, with tarred and gravel routes radiating to productive loops like the S100 and toward N’wanetsi in the east. Shaded camp grounds and mature trees give respite from the Lowveld heat, while nearby waterholes and rivers add dependable viewing through the dry season.

Rooms

Accommodation spans SANParks categories suited to couples, families and groups: self-catering bungalows with private bathrooms and kitchenettes or access to communal kitchens, family cottages and several guest houses, plus a large campsite with ablutions. Units prioritize functionality, braai areas and shade rather than luxury. For hosted itineraries, en-suite, air-conditioned units near facilities or departure points are selected to match group size and to enable early starts for prime morning game viewing.

Facilities

Facilities include a restaurant with take-away service, a convenience/curio shop, a large swimming pool, day-visitor area, filling station and car-wash, plus reception services for guided activities. Two notable hides serve the broader Satara area—Sweni on the S37 near N’wanetsi and Ratelpan on the S39 north of Timbavati Picnic Site—supplementing productive loops and waterholes. Cellular coverage is generally available; camp-wide Wi-Fi is not a headline feature, so plan for limited connectivity while enjoying the camp’s wildlife-rich setting.
