Remote Kalahari Escape on a Community-Owned Concession
Set atop a high dune above a vast salt pan, !Xaus Lodge is a community-owned, eco-sensitive hideaway deep in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. With just twelve chalets and limited generator power, nights explode with stars and days unfold at an unhurried desert rhythm—dune walks with local guides, nature drives for black-maned lion country, birding along dry riverbeds, and San cultural encounters that reveal the Kalahari’s pulse.

Location & Setting
Located on the 91st dune off the Auob River Road, !Xaus looks over a vast saltpan and a freshwater-fed waterhole in the South African section of the Kgalagadi. The park protects red dunes, sparse savanna and the dry Auob and Nossob riverbeds, famous for raptors and Kalahari predators. Access is by 4×4 transfer arranged by the lodge from the nearest park gate; the remote setting ensures dark skies and deep quiet, with wildlife often visible from the lodge decks.
Rooms
Accommodation comprises 12 en-suite chalets, including one family unit that sleeps four. Each has twin or king beds, winter sheets and gas heaters for cold nights, ceiling fans for summer, purified drinking water and a private deck facing the pan. The style is simple and comfortable rather than opulent, aligning with the camp’s low-impact ethos. With no guest Wi-Fi and only limited generator power for lighting and charging, the focus stays firmly on the desert, the silence and the stars.
Facilities
Days begin slowly with coffee on your deck watching oryx and springbok cross the pan, followed by guided dune walks to track insects, plants and prints. Later, nature drives explore the Auob dunes and dry riverbeds, returning for sunset on the ridge and stargazing with telescopes after dinner. Between activities, guests relax at the pool or on linked viewing decks; the central lodge houses a dining room, lounge, bar and craft shop that supports local artisans.
