Four Star rating:
Motswari's well-appointed four-star safari lodge is tucked away in the northeastern corner of the Timbavati Game Reserve. The reserve is open to the Kruger National Park, making it an ideal location for a safari. Timbavati is, of course, internationally acclaimed for its very rare occurrence of white lions, the only place in Africa - and in fact in the world - where this phenomena has been recorded and where the possibility exists to view these impressive creatures in a completely natural habitat.
Motswari offers just 15 comfortable thatched ‘rondavel-style' chalets, decorated with hints of colonial Africa. The en suite bathrooms are spacious, with bathtub views of the surrounding bush and river. The lodge is located on the edge of the mopane belt, a vast tract of woodland stretching from the east to the west coast of southern Africa and dominated by the mopane tree, a much-loved food source for elephants. Game drives in this environment provide a welcome change of scenery to the typical acacia bushveld savanna to the south in the Sabi Sand and Kruger National Park.
A highlight of your safari is sure to be evening meals, enjoyed in the boma under a large mopane tree. The lodge's capable Shangaan staff will serve you in colorful traditional dress and often sing songs as they carry in your scrumptious meal.
The most important reason for your stay will naturally be the game drives, conducted twice daily by skilled and knowledgeable rangers and trackers on comfortable open-top 4x4 vehicles. Your afternoon game drive will continue well after sunset, offering the opportunity to encounter nocturnal creatures as they wake from their daylight inactivity. The lodge's close proximity to the Kruger National Park means that you will enjoy an abundance of wildlife sightings, including the entire Big Five complement and a variety of other species.
From O R Tambo International Airport, guests fly to Hoedspruit and are transferred to Motswari in the Timbavati Private Game Reserve for their South African safari. Enjoy extended Big Five game drives in open Land Rovers and get intimate with the wilderness on guided safari walks. Game drives are typically conducted in the early mornings and late afternoons - when animals are at their most active.
For surplus magic on your safari, opt for overnight bush hiking and a sleep-out under the stars. Mealtimes are served in the boma or in the wild throes of the bush itself. Relax with a book in the lodge's library or make use of the internet facilities to connect with the outside world. Ward off the summertime heat in the lodge's sparkling swimming pool. The lodge offers an authentic safari experience in the greater Kruger National Park.
When it comes to wildlife viewing, location is paramount. Motswari Game Reserve is almost a 'best kept secret', a very well-located yet affordable safari lodge in one of South Africa's premier wildlife destinations. I spent some time at the lodge recently and I highly recommend it. The unique mopane environment provides an excellent contrast to the acacia woodland to the south. Combining two or more nights at Motswari with a few nights at Hamiltons Tented Camp in the central Kruger National Park makes for a rewarding, comprehensive yet affordable safari experience.
