Village Hotel Below the Tulbagh Mountains

The Tulbagh Hotel lies in South Africa’s fourth-oldest town, as Tulbagh is often called, in a valley ringed by mountains on three sides. Leafy courtyards and friendly service set a slow pace, and Cape Town is about ninety minutes away.

Overview of Tulbagh Boutique Heritage Hotel

Church Street, the village’s famous row of restored houses, is a short walk from the hotel.

Location & Setting

Walking the village streets and driving out to the wine farms are both easy from here. Tulbagh is best known for Church Street, whose 18th- and 19th-century houses were restored after the earthquake of September 1969, a magnitude 6.3 quake often called South Africa’s worst.

The Witzenberg, Winterhoek and Obiqua mountains close in the Tulbagh valley on three sides and often carry snow in winter. Its wine farms are known for Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines and Rhône-style reds.

Rooms

The hotel’s Heritage Collection is being restored, so guests currently stay in the Contemporary Collection. Its rooms carry flower names such as the Jasmine Signature Room, Snow Protea, King Protea, Sunburst, Reed, Erica and Disa, and one of the suites has a four-poster bed. Interiors pair traditional touches with modern comfort, and bathrooms are en suite.

Facilities

Meals are served at the Olive Terrace Bistro, and the Karee Wine & Tapas Bar serves wine and small plates. There is also a spa for massages and beauty treatments.
