Skukuza is the main camp of the Kruger Park . It is located on the southern banks of the Sabie River. The camp is named after James Stevenson-Hamilton, who was the park's first warden. 'Skukuza' is a Tsonga name, meaning 'he who sweeps clean'. The camp is home to the Stevenson-Hamilton Memorial Museum which has many fascinating artifacts, the most renowned of which is the knife that ranger Harry Wolhuter made use of to kill a lion and save his own life.

There are a variety of accommodation options available, from camp sites and tents to luxury bungalows, cottages and guest houses. When on a South Africa safari with African Sky, you will always stay in your own air-conditioned private room with an en suite bathroom. The rooms are built in the style of thatched bungalows, giving the camp a true safari look.

The main building houses a restaurant and cafeteria. It also offers an extended terrace along the banks of the river, where you can enjoy a drink while watching the sun set over the serene African wilderness. The camp features a shop where basic necessities can be purchased. A swimming pool offers the ideal retreat on warm summer days.

Riaan's Review

Skukuza is the largest of the national park camps in South Africa. The accommodation is comfortable though not luxurious, and the food served in the two camp restaurants amongst the best on offer in Kruger. The area around the camp does tend to get a little congested in South Africa's winter school holidays. The wildlife viewing opportunities that exist around this camp are spectacular. I have enjoyed many leopard, lion and wild dog sightings while staying at Skukuza.
