Highlights & What to Expect

  • Malaria-free Big Five reserve with high elephant densities.
  • Floodlit waterhole and underground hide inside Main Camp.
  • Thatched rondavels, chalets, cottages, safari tents and camping.
  • On-site restaurant (Cattle Baron), shop and swimming pool.
  • Guided game drives and guided walks available with SANParks.
  • River cruises/canoe trails offered nearby at Colchester/Cannonville.
  • About 72 kilometers/1 hour from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) airport.

Location & Setting

Addo Main Camp lies about 72 kilometers northeast of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), reached via the N2 and R335 in roughly one hour. Inside the park’s central section, the camp overlooks a productive, floodlit waterhole used by elephant, buffalo and antelope, with an underground hide for safe, close viewing. The location is well placed for self-drive loops and guided activities in this malaria-free region of the Eastern Cape. Nearby Colchester and the Sundays River mouth provide additional marine-adjacent experiences such as boat cruises and canoe trails.

Rooms

Accommodation spans traditional thatched rondavels and family chalets to cottages, safari tents and a well-kept campsite. Units vary in layout and view; several rondavels face the waterhole. All accommodation booked through SANParks includes private facilities and daily servicing, with bed configurations available as double, twin or single depending on unit type. Because inventory changes over time, the property does not publish a single static room count; presenting “varied units” avoids inaccuracies while reflecting the diverse options for couples, families and small groups.

Facilities

Facilities include the Cattle Baron Grill & Bistro for a la carte meals, a convenience shop for basics and curios, and a swimming pool reserved for overnight guests. The standout is the floodlit waterhole with an adjacent underground hide and the SASOL Red Bishop Bird Hide, popular for weavers and bishops. Guided sunrise, sunset and night drives typically depart from Main Camp, and short guided walks operate in designated zones; longer hikes and 4×4 routes are available elsewhere in the park.
