Location & Setting
Set on a forested ridge in the northern Hluhluwe sector, Hilltop Camp overlooks a classic KZN landscape of undulating hills, river valleys and thornveld. Its elevation brings cooling breezes and broad, photogenic vistas, while resident nyala, warthog and samango monkeys are often seen around camp. Memorial Gate is the closest entrance; from there, the signed internal road to Hilltop typically takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on sightings and speed limits. Durban’s King Shaka International Airport is the primary gateway, with a straightforward highway drive of roughly three hours to the reserve, traffic permitting.
Rooms
Accommodation spans self-catering chalets with kitchenettes and braai facilities, as well as non-self-catering units sold on a bed-and-breakfast or dinner, bed & breakfast basis. Interiors are simple, practical and air-conditioned, with thatched roofs and high ceilings that keep spaces cool in summer. Most units feature private bathrooms; layouts vary from two-sleeper rondavels to larger family chalets. Daily servicing is provided. While not a luxury lodge, Hilltop’s value lies in its location, flexibility of meal options, and easy access to guided activities arranged through reception.
Facilities
The camp’s social heart is the Mpunyane Restaurant and bar, opening onto decks with sweeping views—ideal for sunrise coffee or a sundowner after your drive. A curio shop stocks basics and souvenirs, and there’s a swimming pool for hot afternoons. Reception handles bookings for guided day and night game drives and short, ranger-led walks. Wi-Fi is typically available but limited and may be intermittent; consider downloading maps and confirmations in advance. Fuel and additional supplies are available elsewhere in the region; check gate hours and travel times to ensure you return before closing.
