Sunrise and sunset are the main attractions at Onkoshi, where the rooms look directly over Etosha Pan. The remote setting is especially rewarding during the wetter months, when birdlife increases and flamingos may gather on the pan.

Palmwag is well placed for travelers continuing between Damaraland and Kaokoland. The surrounding concession is important for desert-adapted wildlife, while the lodge itself offers gardens, pools and welcome shade after a day on the road.

Game drives at Safarihoek take place on a large private reserve bordering Etosha. The area supports lion, elephant and black rhino, while night drives and time in the photographic hide offer a different experience from staying inside the national park.

Shipwreck Lodge offers one of Namibia’s most unusual stays. Reaching it is part of the experience, and days are spent exploring an isolated coast of dunes, seal colonies, whale bones and the remains of vessels lost at sea.

Location is the main advantage here. Guests stay at the gate to Namib-Naukluft National Park and can visit Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon before returning for dinner on the open terrace.

The old station building gives the Swakopmund Hotel a distinctive entrance and a sense of local history. Its size and facilities make it quite different from the town’s smaller boutique hotels and guest houses.

Hoanib is a fly-in camp for travelers drawn to remote wilderness rather than frequent wildlife sightings. The dry river valley supports surprisingly large numbers of animals, and selected stays include an overland journey to the coast, followed by a scenic flight back.

Staying on the private reserve shortens the drive to Sossusvlei and allows more time among the dunes in the cooler morning hours. Nature drives, guided walks and e-bike outings explore the quieter desert surrounding the lodge.

The camp is close enough to Sossusvlei for early visits without the longer approach from Sesriem. Outside the dune excursions, the focus shifts to the surrounding reserve, with nature drives, walks and stargazing in the open desert.
