Desert Horse Inn is set in Namibia's Aus Mountains a stone's throw from the town that bears the name of the mountain range. Perched at an altitude of 1400m, the inn affords grand views of the surrounding desert and mountains, in one of Namibia's coldest regions. Those traveling between Sossusvlei and the Fish River Canyon are sure to find it a most convenient halfway destination in the very sparsely populated southern part of Namibia, where great distances often have to be covered between the region's towns. It also serves as an ideal base from which to explore the Namibian coastal town of Luderitz.
Though not luxurious by any standard, Desert Horse Inn offers comfortable accommodation in twenty-four rooms. Four of these rooms are part of the old farmhouse, while the other twenty are made up of free-standing chalets. The central area offers a bar and restaurant as well as an outside viewing deck, from where it seems possible to stare out into eternity.
It is sure to be apparent that the property is family-owned and -managed with authentic hospitality and exceptional service levels - a fact that more often than not creates a clear distinction between owner-managed accommodation facilities and those that form part of larger, more impersonal hotel chains.
Comfortable four star accommodation in a region that can only be described as the middle of nowhere, is what is on offer at the Desert Horse Inn. It is one of the best places to break a journey between Sossusvlei and the Fish River Canyon.
