Location & Setting
Desert Horse Inn sits just east of Aus inside the Klein-Aus Vista reserve, where the Namib’s dune-scrub meets the rocky Aus Mountains. From its elevated position you overlook broad, elemental plains with big-sky sunsets and night skies ideal for stargazing. The lodge lies on the easy tarred B4, making day trips practical: the Garub waterhole for viewing the famed wild horses is roughly 20 km west, while Kolmanskop and Lüderitz lie further along the same route. It’s also a convenient stop when linking the Fish River Canyon with Sossusvlei on a longer south-western Namibia journey.
Rooms
The inn offers 30 rooms configured for couples, friends and families: 21 twin rooms, 3 doubles and 6 four-bed family units. Interiors are simple, airy and practical, with en-suite showers, ceiling fans, heating, tea/coffee facilities, a small fridge, personal safe and a veranda to take in the views. Wi-Fi is available, and mobile reception is generally good. Rooms are clustered near the central facilities for easy access to meals and the sundeck. This flexible layout makes Desert Horse Inn a reliable choice for self-drivers as well as small groups exploring Namibia’s south-western highlights.
Facilities
At the heart of the property you’ll find a welcoming restaurant and the characterful Wild Horse Bar, opening onto an upper wooden deck for sunset views. A cold-water swimming pool offers relief on hot afternoons, and there’s secure parking at the main lodge. Guests can book guided half- or full-day desert tours and sunset drives, or pick up trail maps for hiking and mountain-biking on clearly marked routes. Wi-Fi and general mobile connectivity are available. The team also shares tips for day trips to Kolmanskop and Lüderitz and the best times to see the Garub wild horses.
