A Private Tour Through Southern Namibia
Starting and ending in Windhoek, this privately guided tour explores southern Namibia over ten days. Two nights each in the Kalahari, Fish River Canyon, Aus and Sossusvlei create a balanced route through red-dune country, canyon landscapes, diamond-mining history and the Namib’s most famous dune fields.
Tour Overview
The route is designed as a gradual progression through southern Namibia rather than a sequence of one-night stops. After the first night in Windhoek, the tour moves south across the central plateau and later turns west through increasingly remote desert country. Dedicated sightseeing days allow time for historic sites, guided activities and unhurried exploration between the longer road sectors.
Travel Pace & Distances
Driving is an important part of the experience. Several transfer days cover substantial distances on a mixture of paved and gravel roads, but longer stays break up the route and provide time for exploration. Comfort, refreshment and photographic stops can be made along the way because the vehicle and guide are private.
Ideal For
This tour is best suited to travelers who enjoy scenery, photography, history and overland exploration. It offers a slower, more detailed alternative to a fly-in itinerary and works particularly well for travelers who want to explore southern Namibia in depth. Namibia Tour Itinerary: 10 Day Southern Namibia Private Overland Tour
Day 1: Windhoek
Highlights
- Meet your private African Sky guide in Windhoek.
- Private airport transfer to Hotel Heinitzburg.
- Relax before exploring southern Namibia.
Guests are met by their private African Sky guide on arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport and transferred to Windhoek. The drive into the capital provides an easy introduction to Namibia before the longer overland sectors through the country's southern regions begin. After checking in at Hotel Heinitzburg, the remainder of the afternoon is deliberately relaxed, allowing time to settle in after the flight, enjoy the hotel's elevated setting and prepare for the days ahead.
Depending on arrival time, there may be an opportunity for a short orientation through Windhoek or simply time to unwind before dinner. Your guide will confirm the following morning's departure arrangements and discuss practical aspects of the tour, including road conditions and the expected pace over the coming days. This comfortable first night allows guests to begin well rested before the route heads south toward the distinctive red-dune landscapes of the Kalahari.
Day 2: Windhoek / Kalahari
Highlights
- Travel south from Windhoek toward the Kalahari.
- See Namibia’s distinctive red-dune landscapes emerge.
- Settle in for a two-night Kalahari stay.
After breakfast, the tour leaves Windhoek and travels south through Namibia’s central plateau toward the Kalahari. The countryside becomes progressively more open as the route passes through small towns, farmland and dry savanna before reaching the red sands and grass-covered dunes characteristic of this part of eastern Namibia. Suitable comfort and photographic stops are made along the way, while the moderate travel day allows the tour to reach the Kalahari without continuing directly to the far south.
Guests check in at Kalahari Anib Lodge, situated among red dunes and open Kalahari savanna near Mariental. The afternoon is kept unhurried, with time to enjoy the lodge, explore the immediate surroundings or simply take in the contrast between red sand, pale grasses and expansive skies. As the temperature drops later in the day, the softer light across the dunes provides an atmospheric introduction to the landscapes that distinguish this part of southern Namibia.
Day 3: Kalahari
Highlights
- Explore the Kalahari on a guided nature drive.
- Look for wildlife among red dunes and grasslands.
- Enjoy a second night in the desert surroundings.
A full day is available to experience the Kalahari from Kalahari Anib Lodge. Your African Sky guide leads a nature drive through the surrounding dune landscape, where the route crosses red sand ridges, open grassland and scattered woodland. Wildlife varies with season and natural movement, but oryx, springbok, ostrich and other species adapted to this semi-arid environment may be encountered. Along the way, your guide provides insight into the plants, animals and environmental conditions that shape life in the Kalahari.
After the drive, guests return to the lodge with time to relax during the warmer part of the day. The pools, shaded areas and open views make it easy to slow the pace before the route continues south the following morning. Later in the afternoon, the low light over the red dunes offers particularly attractive photographic conditions, while the second night provides an opportunity to appreciate the quieter character of the Kalahari after daytime visitors and road traffic have faded away.
Day 4: Kalahari / Fish River Canyon
Highlights
- Travel deeper into Namibia’s arid southern landscapes.
- Watch red Kalahari sands give way to rocky terrain.
- Arrive near the Fish River Canyon for two nights.
After breakfast, the tour leaves the Kalahari and continues south toward the Fish River Canyon region. The route passes through increasingly dry and sparsely populated country, with broad plains, low ridges and distant mountains emphasizing the scale of southern Namibia. The transition from the softer red sands of the Kalahari to the stonier landscapes farther south gives the day a distinctive visual progression, with suitable stops made for refreshments, comfort and photography.
During the afternoon, guests arrive at Canyon Lodge, set among granite boulders less than 20 kilometers from the Fish River Canyon. After check-in, the rest of the day is planned around the available time and light. If conditions permit, an initial visit to one of the canyon viewpoints can be made before returning to the lodge; otherwise, the main exploration is left for the following day. Two nights here allow the canyon region to be experienced without rushing directly onward after the road journey.
Day 5: Fish River Canyon
Highlights
- Visit the principal Fish River Canyon viewpoints.
- Learn about the canyon’s extraordinary geological history.
- Enjoy a second night among Canyon Lodge’s boulders.
Today is devoted to the Fish River Canyon, Africa's largest canyon and one of the world's great geological landscapes. Your African Sky guide leads the excursion to the principal viewpoints, where the Fish River has carved a vast, winding gorge through the rocky plateau. The canyon extends for roughly 160 kilometers, reaches widths of about 27 kilometers and descends to around 550 meters at its deepest points. Time is allowed at the viewpoints for photography and for your guide to explain the geology and long natural history of the region.
After the canyon visit, guests return to Canyon Lodge for a slower afternoon. The lodge’s boulder-strewn setting and surrounding desert scenery provide an attractive contrast to the immense scale of the gorge, with time to relax before dinner and enjoy the quiet southern landscape. Staying for a second night gives guests time to appreciate the canyon properly and creates a welcome break before the route turns west toward Aus the following morning.
Day 6: Fish River Canyon / Aus
Highlights
- Travel west across remote southern Namibia.
- Enter the rugged landscapes of the Aus Mountains.
- Settle in at Desert Horse Inn for two nights.
After breakfast, the tour leaves the Fish River Canyon region and travels west toward Aus. The route crosses the open landscapes of southern Namibia, where rocky ridges, gravel plains and distant mountains create a strong sense of isolation. As the route approaches Aus, the scenery changes again around the granite-gneiss hills of Klein-Aus Vista, where the desert begins to merge with golden grasslands and the more rugged terrain of the Aus Mountains.
Guests check in at Desert Horse Inn for two nights. The afternoon is deliberately left less structured after the drive, allowing time to enjoy the lodge surroundings, take a short walk where appropriate or simply relax before dinner. Aus is particularly well positioned for the following day’s excursion toward the Atlantic coast, with the Garub wild-horse viewing area, Kolmanskop and Lüderitz all lying along the route to the west. This makes Desert Horse Inn an ideal base without requiring another overnight move.
Day 7: Aus / Kolmanskop / Lüderitz
Highlights
- Stop at the Garub wild-horse viewing area.
- Explore the abandoned diamond settlement of Kolmanskop.
- Visit the Atlantic coastal town of Lüderitz.
The day follows the road west from Aus toward the Atlantic coast. The first stop is the Garub wild-horse viewing area, where Namibia’s free-roaming desert horses may sometimes be seen on the surrounding plains or near the water point. Sightings depend entirely on the animals’ natural movements, but the stop provides an opportunity to learn about a population that has adapted to one of the driest environments in the country.
The route continues to Kolmanskop, the abandoned diamond-mining settlement established after diamonds were discovered in the area in 1908. A guided visit explores buildings gradually being reclaimed by desert sand and reveals the remarkable rise and decline of the settlement. Afterwards, the tour continues to Lüderitz, where time is available to see the harbor and some of the town’s distinctive historic architecture before returning inland to Aus. Guests spend a second night at Desert Horse Inn after a varied day combining desert wildlife, history and Atlantic coastal scenery.
Day 8: Aus / Sossusvlei
Highlights
- Travel north through the remote southern Namib.
- Cross gravel plains, valleys and mountain landscapes.
- Arrive near Sesriem for a two-night desert stay.
After breakfast, the tour leaves Aus and begins the long but scenic drive north toward Sossusvlei. The road crosses some of Namibia’s most sparsely populated terrain, passing broad gravel plains, mountain scenery and dry valleys as the route moves deeper into the Namib. The changing colors and geology provide much of the interest during the transfer, and suitable stops are made for refreshments, comfort and photography along the way.
Later in the day, the landscape begins to take on the familiar character of the Sossusvlei region, with red dunes rising beyond pale plains near Sesriem. Guests check in at Sossusvlei Lodge, situated at the entrance to Namib-Naukluft Park, for two nights. The remainder of the afternoon is available to relax and enjoy the desert setting. An early night is worthwhile because the following morning begins before the heat builds and is devoted to exploring Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and the surrounding dune field.
Day 9: Sossusvlei
Highlights
- Explore Sossusvlei and the ancient trees of Deadvlei.
- Experience the immense dunes of the Namib Sand Sea.
- Walk through the narrow walls of Sesriem Canyon.
An early departure is made for Sossusvlei so that the dune field can be explored during the cooler morning hours and in softer light. The route follows the Tsauchab valley between immense red dunes before reaching Sossusvlei and nearby Deadvlei. Here, old blackened camel thorn trees stand across the pale clay pan beneath some of the Namib Sand Sea’s most dramatic dunes. Guests who are physically comfortable doing so may choose to climb part of an accessible dune for elevated views across the surrounding landscape.
Time is allowed for photography, short walks and interpretation of the desert environment before returning toward Sesriem. Later in the day, the tour visits Sesriem Canyon, where the Tsauchab River has cut a narrow gorge through layers of sediment and rock. After exploring the canyon, guests return to Sossusvlei Lodge for a second night, completing a full day focused on the landscapes that make this part of Namibia so distinctive.
Day 10: Sossusvlei / Windhoek
Highlights
- Leave the Namib after a final desert morning.
- Travel north through central Namibia toward Windhoek.
- Return to Windhoek for onward travel arrangements.
After breakfast, the tour leaves the Sossusvlei region and begins the return journey to Windhoek. The road travels north through the open landscapes of central Namibia, gradually leaving the dune country behind as the terrain becomes more mountainous and settled. Suitable stops are made for refreshments, comfort and photography, while the drive provides a final opportunity to appreciate the scale and changing scenery that define overland travel through this sparsely populated part of Namibia.
On arrival in the Windhoek area, guests are transferred either to Hosea Kutako International Airport for onward travel or to separately arranged accommodation if they are extending their stay. The tour ends after ten days exploring some of Namibia's most remote southern landscapes, with the private format providing flexibility for stops and sightseeing along the way. Guests continuing their travels can easily connect Windhoek with other regions of Namibia or onward destinations in Southern Africa.
