Rattray's on Mala Mala reminds visitors of a bygone era, when luxury and opulence merged seamlessly with the natural world on luxury African safari experiences reminiscent of "Out of Africa". The lodge is located on the largest privately owned Big Five reserve in the greater Kruger National Park, wedged between Kruger and Sabi Sand. This area offers some of the finest game-viewing in Africa, and you are likely to spot a greater diversity of species than in any other South African safari area.
Accommodation is provided in eight khayas, each spacious and lavishly decorated. The khayas all offer river views. Each is equipped with an indoor and outdoor dining area, a his and hers bathroom as well as a heated plunge pool. Air-conditioning and ceiling fans add to the comfort during the warm summer days. Computer and internet facilities connect you to the rest of the world should you so require.
The main lodge is elegant and inviting. It features a lounge and dining room as well as a library which houses some rare books and works of art. The wine cellar is stocked with a great selection of fine local and international wines. These areas walk out onto a central deck and swimming pool area. The bar features photos which depict the history of the area and its pioneers. The camp also features a small gym. Massages and other therapies are available on request.
From O R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, guests fly directly to the eminent Mala Mala Private Game Reserve and on to the Rattray's lodge for their luxury South Africa safari. A profusion of game resides in the area, from the illustrious Big Five to the sporadic pack of wild dog or trio of cheetah. With four guests limited to an open-air game viewing vehicle, exclusivity is guaranteed. Guests seeking to explore the wealth of nature more intimately can opt for a guided nature walk.
The lodge itself has plenty to offer in terms of recreation, from leisurely dips in your suite's own plunge pool to catching up with the outside world via internet or satellite television. Mealtimes are hosted with breathtaking backdrops, whether on the deck overlooking the Sand River below, the regal luxury of the dining room or fireside under the gaze of the stars. Though not included in the safari package, indulging in a spa treatment in the privacy of your suite may enhance an already divine getaway.
