Birkenhead House is situated in the coastal town of Hermanus in the Western Cape. Hermanus is famous for being one of the finest destinations in the world for land-based whale watching. As Birkenhead House rests on the rocky outcrops right next to the beach, there is perhaps no better place to view these gentle giants from. From July to December, Southern Right and Humpback whales frequent these waters and, from a vantage point like Birkenhead House, one can truly appreciate their splendor. Hot summers day may be spent unwinding on the beach – which is literally at your front porch – or, you can relax poolside on the picturesque deck.
No efforts were spared while decorating the interior of the hotel or rooms. The boutique hotel offers eleven sumptuous suites, all including en suite bathrooms with a separate bath and shower. The all-inclusive rates cover complimentary WiFi throughout the hotel, all meals, beverages, snacks and everything in the mini-bar. The rooms are also air-conditioned for your comfort and fitted with flat screen televisions and DVD players.
The Deluxe Superior and Superior rooms all have sea views and offer the epitome of comfort and style. The smaller Luxury and Standard rooms are only slightly less extravagant, but still fit for a King. World-class cuisine is served at the Birkenhead House Restaurant. The executive chef, Ziyaad Browne, grew up in the Western Cape and is intimately familiar with local dishes of Cape Malay influence. Only the freshest ingredients are used to deliver the heartiest of meals. Local seafood depends on what is in season and available, and can range from marlin to Cape salmon. Fresher mussels cannot be found, as the mussels are plucked right off the rocks in front of the hotel. The menus and meals are designed around the preferences of every individual guest.
There are plenty of activities in the surrounding area to keep you busy, like shark cage diving in nearby Gansbaai. More discerning travelers may sample some of the finest wines on the surrounding wine farms.
