Your Guide to Speaking Safari Like a Local

If your first African safari has you hearing terms like “Big Five,” “Ugly Five,” or “sundowner” and wondering if you missed a memo, you are not alone. Safari talk can sound like an insider’s code, but with a little know-how, you will be speaking the language of the bush like a seasoned traveler.

At African Sky Safaris & Tours, we have been crafting private, tailor-made safaris through Southern Africa’s wild landscapes since 1998. Along the way, we have helped thousands of first-time safari goers not only spot iconic animals in Africa but also feel confident with the lingo that brings the experience to life. This guide will decode the most common and most charming terms you will encounter on your journey.

What Does “Safari” Mean?

The word safari comes from the Swahili word for “journey,” which itself has Arabic roots (safar, meaning “to travel”). Originally, it referred to long hunting expeditions across Africa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today, the safari meaning has shifted dramatically. Modern African safaris focus on conservation, photography, and sustainable tourism. Instead of rifles, guests now carry cameras, and the goal is to protect rather than pursue the extraordinary wildlife of this continent.

The Big Five

The “Big Five” is not about size. It is about challenges. Early hunters used the term to describe the five most difficult animals in Africa to track and hunt on foot:

  • Lion – The king of the African savanna, known for its power and pride structure.
  • Leopard – Elusive, solitary, and a master of camouflage.
  • African Elephant – The largest land mammal, intelligent and social.
  • Cape Buffalo – Powerful and unpredictable.
  • Rhinoceros – Critically endangered and fiercely protected.

Today, on an African safari, seeing all five on a single trip is a badge of honor and far more rewarding through a camera lens. Prime viewing spots include Kruger National Park in South Africa, the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and Etosha National Park in Namibia.

The Super Seven

The “Super Seven” expands the Big Five to include two equally thrilling sightings:

  • Cheetah – The fastest land animal, often seen in open grasslands.
  • African Wild Dog – Endangered, highly social predators with intricate pack dynamics.

Spotting either is a rare privilege on African safari tours, making the Super Seven a true checklist for wildlife lovers.

The Ugly Five

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and these creatures prove it. Guides affectionately refer to the “Ugly Five” as:

  • Hyena
  • Warthog
  • Vulture
  • Marabou Stork
  • Wildebeest

While they might not win a beauty pageant, each plays a vital role in Africa’s ecosystems, from scavenging to seed dispersal. Despite their looks, each has its own charm like the warthog’s comical run with its tail held high.

The Little Five

A playful nod to the Big Five, the “Little Five” are small but fascinating creatures named after their larger counterparts:

  • Elephant Shrew
  • Ant Lion
  • Rhinoceros Beetle
  • Buffalo Weaver
  • Leopard Tortoise

Finding them is like a treasure hunt, and our African Sky guides love introducing guests to these mini marvels. Spotting them often requires patience and a keen eye, making it a rewarding challenge for guests.

Other Common Safari Terms You Will Hear

Your African safari experience will include a few more local favorites:

  • Game Drive – Guided excursion to spot wildlife, usually at dawn or late afternoon.
  • Sundowner – A drink enjoyed as the sun sets over the bushveld.
  • Bushveld – The diverse mix of grassland and woodland found in Southern Africa.
