Explore the central and northern corners of the esteemed Kruger wilderness on a leisurely self-drive safari.
Clients are met upon arrival at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg by a representative of African Sky Safaris & Tours, who will present them with their self-drive Kruger Park safari itinerary, a map book of South Africa and a GPS. At this time, clients are also presented with accommodation and other relevant vouchers which they will require on their self-drive tour. Clients are then assisted in obtaining their rental vehicle before embarking on their safari in the Kruger National Park.
Your Kruger Park safari will be split between two areas; the Satara region, in the south-central grasslands of the park, and Lower Sabie, in the deep southern reaches on the banks of the Sabie River. Satara is known as 'the cat camp'. As it is surrounded by woodland savanna, the area is a prolific feeding ground for all manner of grazers and lures large herds of zebra and blue wildebeest. In turn, the prevalence of so much prey lures predators like leopard and lions.
Lower Sabie's riverine setting also makes it popular amongst wildlife. You're sure to encounter a wealth of hippos and crocodiles, as well as elephants soaking themselves luxuriously in the deeper dams of the river. Lower Sabie Rest Camp overlooks such a dam, and it is quite common to observe wildlife from the deck of the camp's main restaurant.
On an evening of your choice, from either Satara or Lower Sabie, you will head into the park after night has fallen for an evening game drive in the company of a park ranger. Armed with spotlights, you will look out for any movement in the gloom and shed light on the fascinating nocturnal creatures that call Kruger home. Lions, leopards, and hyenas are also frequently spotted on night drives.
