Sossusvlei
Sprawling across the Namib-Naukluft National Park in sandy towers of shimmering red, Sossusvlei is one of the most otherworldly safari destinations on the continent. This is not somewhere you travel to for prolific game viewing, but rather for the most unique of safari experiences.
While desert-adapted wildlife may certainly be spotted – including ostriches, gemsbok, springbok and even brown hyena – it is the scenery that will truly take your breath away. During the day, you can clamber atop the dunes – some higher than 300m (almost 1000ft) – and relish dramatic views of the seemingly never-ending desert. When darkness falls, turn your gaze to the heavens for the most radiant night sky you’ll ever lay eyes on.
Safari activities in Sossusvlei are surprisingly diverse and exciting. You can rush across the desert on a quad bike, get intimate with the details on a guided walk, visit the mystical plane of Deadvlei, trace the crack of Sesriem Canyon or, most memorably, float high above the landscape in a hot air balloon as the sun spills over the dunes at dawn.
