- Lost City Golf Course
Dramatic Desert-Style Golf with African Character
The Lost City Golf Course at Sun City is a bold, visually striking desert-style layout designed by Gary Player — defined by rocky outcrops, wide fairways, warm savanna light, and its signature crocodile-inhabited water hazard. It offers a very different experience to its championship neighbour, the Gary Player Country Club — more theatrical, more forgiving off the tee, and deeply rooted in the drama of its African location.
General Course Information
Area and Setting
The Lost City course stretches across open savanna terrain with rugged desert-style shaping, rocky ridges, and panoramic views of the surrounding Pilanesberg hills. It feels wilder and more theatrical than its sister course, the Gary Player Country Club — less tree-lined, more open, with warm sunlight and African red earth giving the course its distinct visual identity. Wildlife sightings are not uncommon, especially from tees and elevated vantage points.
Generous fairways and receptive greens make the course welcoming to resort golfers, while strategic bunkering, elevation changes, and risk-reward options give experienced players plenty to think about. It’s a visually engaging course to play — every hole feels different, every vista introduces new textures of rock, grass, water, and bushveld horizon.
Layout and Signature Holes
The 13th hole is the most famous — a par three played over a crocodile-filled lake to a peninsula green, one of Africa’s most photographed golf holes. The closing stretch winds back toward the palace architecture of Sun City, combining theatre with scoring opportunity. Many of the tee shots invite bold carries, but safer ground options are almost always available — making the course enjoyable for both bold strikers and relaxed resort players.
Best Time of Year for a Round
Sun City is warm year-round, but winter (May–August) offers the most comfortable conditions — cool mornings and clear air with almost no rain. Summer play is best early, before midday heat rises. Golden-hour tee times are particularly beautiful, with long shadows across the rock formations and rich gold light bathing the bushveld.
