South Africa Tour Itinerary: 4 Day Private Highlights of Cape Town Tour

Day 1: Arrival / Cape Town

Overnight: The Winchester
Meals: None

Highlights

  • Wine tasting at Lourensford with mountain and vineyard views.
  • Stroll historic Stellenbosch, including Dorp Street’s classic architecture.
  • Optional visit to a Stellenbosch estate like Tokara or Lanzerac.

Guests are met upon arrival at Cape Town International Airport or any other location of their choice in Cape Town. From here, a short drive brings the tour to Lourensford, a historic estate in the Somerset West area with a strong winemaking heritage. Enjoy a tasting in the elegant tasting room with mountain and vineyard views. There is also a craft brewery and coffee roastery on site, which is ideal for guests who prefer alternatives to wine, and there is usually time to browse the grounds before continuing.

From here, we visit Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s most beautiful and historically significant towns. Walk along Dorp Street to view fine examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian, and Victorian architecture set amongst ancient oak trees. Lunch is followed by a visit to a leading wine estate on the Stellenbosch Wine Route, where guests can enjoy an introduction to wine-making in South Africa. Favorites include Lanzerac, Tokara, or Rust en Vrede. We then make our way to the overnight destination in Cape Town.

Day 2: Cape Town

Overnight: The Winchester
Meals: Breakfast

Highlights

  • Visit the historic Castle of Good Hope and museum galleries.
  • Explore the vibrant culture and colorful streets of Bo-Kaap.
  • Deeper historical context at the District Six Museum.

This day of your Cape Town tour is devoted to the history and attractions found within the city. Adderley Street and the upper half of the Heerengracht are traversed before walking down Government Avenue into the heart of Cape Town, with a glimpse of the Houses of Parliament along the way. The tour then visits the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, which now serves primarily as a museum. It houses the Good Hope Gallery and the Military Museum, which preserves artifacts spanning the Dutch and British periods of occupation.

In the afternoon, we visit Bo-Kaap and District Six for an immersive cultural and historical journey. The Bo-Kaap Museum offers insights into the origins of the Cape Malay community, their culture, and the impact of apartheid-era policies on the area. We then walk down Wale Street to admire the colorful houses before a short trip to District Six, where we visit the museum and gain deeper context through exhibits and personal stories. Afterward, we return to our hotel.

Day 3: Cape Town

Overnight: The Winchester
Meals: Breakfast

Highlights

  • Cableway ride up Table Mountain for panoramic city views.
  • Guided viewpoints across the Cape Peninsula and Atlantic coastline.
  • Kirstenbosch gardens and the Boomslang canopy walkway experience.

First on the agenda is a visit to Table Mountain. We ascend via the cableway, enjoying marvelous views of the Cape Town City Bowl and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Upon reaching the summit, time is devoted to visiting different vantage points where impressive views of the Cape Peninsula can be enjoyed. Your guide also provides background on the Cape Floral Kingdom, highlighting fynbos species native to the mountain and explaining why this biodiversity hotspot is globally significant.

After lunch, we visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. The gardens showcase South Africa’s flora with a strong focus on the Cape Floral Kingdom. Highlights include themed areas such as the Fragrance Garden and the Useful Plants Garden, which features plants used in traditional medicine and cooking. Another standout is the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway (Boomslang), which winds through the treetops and offers elevated views toward the mountain. Following the visit, we return to the overnight accommodation.
