- Pecanwood Golf Course
Jack Nicklaus Championship Golf on the Hartbeespoort Dam
Pecanwood is one of South Africa’s earliest Jack Nicklaus Signature designs — a refined championship course framed by glassy lakes, manicured fairways, and the dramatic Magaliesberg mountain range. It offers a polished yet relaxed estate golf experience, ideally positioned for travelers combining Johannesburg luxury with scenic bushveld leisure.
General Course Information
Area and Setting
Positioned along the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam and backed by the ancient Magaliesberg mountains, Pecanwood combines championship architecture with serene lakefront beauty. It is a premium yet relaxed escape from Johannesburg — just under an hour’s drive — offering a more tranquil, nature-rich setting than the city’s parkland member clubs.
The estate is immaculate and peaceful, with open sky, reflective water, and soft mountain silhouettes defining the course’s visual identity. While it lacks the theatrical spectacle of Sun City or the raw wilderness of Kruger-edge courses, its appeal lies in calm sophistication — smooth surfaces, intelligent Nicklaus shaping, and a composed luxury estate atmosphere.
Layout and Signature Holes
Fairways are generous off the tee, but reward positional accuracy for superior angles into firm, fast greens. Water is featured on several holes but integrated with restraint and purpose. The par-three 13th — played directly across the water with mountains rising beyond — is the standout, elegant rather than intimidating. Overall, the course encourages confident golfing rhythm over brute force.
Best Time of Year for a Round
Being part of Gauteng’s highveld climate, Pecanwood is at its best from late autumn through winter (April–August) — clear air, fast-running surfaces, crisp mornings. Summer is lush and warm, best enjoyed with early tee times before midday heat. Late afternoon golden light across the dam and mountains is particularly memorable.
