Sun City was a product of the hotel magnate Sol Kerzner and was developed part of the Sun International group of properties. The resort was officially opened on 7 December 1977. At the time of the opening it was located in Bophuthatswana.
As Bophuthatswana had been declared an independent state by South Africa's apartheid government it was allowed under the South African law at the time to provide entertainment such as gambling and topless revue shows, all which were banned in South Africa. These factors, as well as its relatively close location to the large metropolitan areas of Pretoria and Johannesburg, ensured that Sun City soon became a popular holiday and weekend destination.
The Sun City Resort includes four hotels, the Cabanas, the Cascades, the Sun City Main Hotel and the famous Lost City. All around Southern Africa you will find scattered sandstone remnants of ancient African cities, once the hearts of the great trading empires built on gold and ivory. Inspired by these lost empires the Lost City hotel was build in a hidden valley in the mysterious Pilanesberg Mountains. Life at the Lost City moves with the rhythms of the ancient continent, while new African nobility take their ease amid sumptuous luxury. At the Palace, you will encounter the Africa of today, and hear the echoes of an Africa long past.
Sun City, unique in the context of world resorts, with a combination of features unmatched anywhere, draws thousands of visitors each year to its magnificent sporting and recreational facilities including two world class golf courses (The Lost City and Gary Player Country Club) and the magical Lost City water-park, The Valley of Waves. The wide choice of conference venues ensure a level of convention and banqueting facilities which few can beat.
Many famous musicians such as Queen, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Julio Iglesias, The O'Jays, Ray Charles, Boney M., Black Sabbath, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick, Sarah Brightman, Laura Branigan and Thomas Anders (of Modern Talking fame) also performed at the 'Sun City Super Bowl', a large auditorium which seats 6,230. Sun City also became the site of several important Heavyweight boxing matches during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Game Trackers will offer guests game drives to the neighbouring Pilanesberg, horseback riding, quad biking, archery, shooting, elephant back rides or a romantic hot air balloon ride. |
