Windhoek is the capital of Namibia it pulsates with life, opportunity, and a sparkle of adventure. Windhoek is placed almost exactly in the middle of Namibia in a basin between the Khomas Highlands, Auos and Eros Mountains. A sense of history is still installed in the characteristics of the German style buildings, almost set as a memorial of Namibia’s early colonial history. The old fort (Alte Feste-once the preserving of the German colonialism now the National Museum which signifies the freedom struggle and Namibian independence), the parliament buildings (Christuskirche and Tintenpalast) are early buildings that are of particular interest to many tourists looking to view the history of the city.
Windhoek is home to the only International airport in Namibia, making this the perfect place to start your adventures. Also being home to Namibia’s brewing industry, makes the perfect place to sit back relax and enjoy an ice cold beer before creating those ever lasting memories.
Wika Carnival has been a big tourist attraction for many years supported during March/April. This is a traditional Namibian-German carnival which features cabaret evenings, an all-night masked ball, the crowning of a prince and princess and a street parade down Independence Avenue. Take a stroll through some of the open air-street markets, into some curio shops and art galleries displaying the delightful craftsmanship in Namibia.
Many of the top hotels are found in Windhoek, although there are other types of accommodation provided such as backpackers or more up-market guest houses and luxury hotels and lodges. |
