A Travel Overview of South Africa

When traveling to South Africa you will find the country located between 22°S and 35°S and 16°E and 33°E , it occupies the most southern tip of Africa. The position of South Africa has an important effect on its development and climate. The country lies in the Southern Hemisphere with its neighbouring states Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho. Being positioned in the low latitudes, or subtropical region and high above sea level are the most important reasons for the country’s pleasant climate. A large diversity in climatic conditions favor the production of a rich variety of agricultural products and an interesting tourism potential.

South Africa’s isolation from most of the developed industrial countries of the world had its advantages. Initiative has been taken in the scientific, technical and medical fields. Excellent means of communication have reduced the long distances and South Africa’s strategic location still endows the country with a strategic importance.

South Africa covers an area of 1 223 201km². Compared to the USA it seems small (about twice the size of Texas, USA) but it is twice the size of France and 36 times the size of the Netherlands. The coastline is 2789 km long – some of the world’s most beautiful beaches can be found along the South African coastline. South Africa has three capital cities – each with its own function namely Cape Town (legislative), Pretoria (administrative) and Bloemfontein (juridicial). The country offers a unique range of travelling options and activities and has in recent years become one of the worlds most popular travel destinations.
