Etosha National Park is widely regarded as one of the best game reserves in Africa to closely observe a startling diversity of animal and bird life. Game viewing is excellent because wildlife is forced to congregate around the park’s water holes for much of the year and there is little vegetation to obstruct one’s view.
Due to the predictability of game concentrations, Etosha is not only one of the most popular parks in southern Africa, it also has an exceptionally high proportion of predators to herbivores. This offers visitors an excellent chance of witnessing thrilling confrontations between lion and zebra, springbok, impala and wildebeest.
Etosha National Park is a place of contrast, taking on a different complexion after heavy summer rains and attracting one of the most impressive flamingo migrations that one is likely to see. The dry brittle vegetation turns a soft green, the animal breeding season begins and for a few months the flat landscape that the Ovambo call the ‘place of great white spaces’ sheds its arid image.
Etosha has three public restcamps – Namutoni, Halali, and Okaukuejo – but if you wish for more personalized service, you may consider staying in one of the privately run camps and hotels as your springboard into the park. It is essential to book accommodation well in advance, even if you only plan to camp or caravan in the park. |
