The bustling township of Soweto , largest of all South Africa's townships is the focus of a morning tour. Soweto played an important role in the struggle against apartheid and we devote some time to Nelson Mandela's years in Soweto before visiting the Hector Peterson memorial which commemorates one of the darkest days in South Africa's history. Finally a visit is made to an authentic Shebeen before traveling on to Gold Reef City.
Golf Reef City is situated on a 10Ha site which surrounds the old no 14 shaft at Crown Mines and depicts elements of Johannesburg as it had been in the gold mining heyday. The influence of this most noble of metals on the history and economic development of South Africa has been nothing short of fundamental and Gold Reef City offers a glimpse into the world of gold and gold mining. Highlights include a trip into the belly of a Gold Mine and the opportunity to view the process by which the metal is melted and poured into the gleaming bars of bullion which is so well known.
