Robben Island Cape Town Day Tour (Code T5) |
Guests are met at any location of their choice in Cape Town, from where they are taken to Table Bay Harbour. The tour begins with a visit to the Robben Island Gateway at the V & A Waterfront. Here a multimedia presentation about Island and its history is viewed before boarding a ferry to Murray Bay where guests disembark onto Robben Island. Also known as "a place where great men met". Robben Island is a historical reminder of the triumph of the human spirit in adverse circumstances.
This historical landmark is synonymous with the struggle against apartheid. We visit the maximum security prison and experience what inmates went through on a daily basis, while serving out their sentences. A highlight of the tour is a visit to the cell of ex President Nelson Mandela. In addition to the prison visit the Island is home to a number of different mammals species which range from Deer to Cape Furr Seals. The wildlife and exceptional views of Table Mountain which can be enjoyed from Robben Island provides an additional dimension to this experience. The ferry returns to the V&A waterfront. Some time is then devoted to enjoying lunch before embarking on an afternoon visit of other Cape Town attractions.
First on the afternoon agenda is the Cape Castle, historically significant in the fact that it is South Africa’s oldest building. In times gone by it served as both prison and administrative headquarters to successive colonial rulers. Subsequent to a tour of the Cape Castle we visit the Companje Gardens It was established in early 1652 by Jan van Riebeeck as a vegetable garden. The original location was however closer to the shoreline. In a bid to plant in more fertile soil and on ground sheltered from the wind, he moved his garden with its northern boundary on Whale Street, and this is where it stands today. The large public park and Botanical Garden is home to a rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond and aviary. Guests are then transferred to their overnight destination located anywhere in Cape Town. |
