Day 1: Sun City
Guests will be met upon arrival at the O.R. Tambo International Airport and will be transferred to the Sun City Resort located two hours from Johannesburg in the North West Province adjacent to the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve. Sun City was developed by the hotel magnate Sol Kerzner and officially opened on 7 December 1979. At the time of its opening it was located in Bophuthatswana. As Bophuthatswana had been declared an independent state by South Africa's apartheid government, it was allowed to provide “immoral” entertainment (in the eyes of the South African government) such as gambling, which was banned in South Africa. These factors, as well as its relatively close location to Pretoria and Johannesburg, ensured that Sun City soon became a popular holiday and weekend destination. It is the ideal place to begin a luxury family tour of South Africa. The afternoon is spent at leisure enjoying the many entertainment options at Sun City.
