The Extensive South African Self Drive Tour offers guests the opportunity of exploring several of South Africa's regions on a self drive tour. The regions include Kruger, the Mpumalanga Highlands, Maputoland, Zululand, the Little Karoo as well as the Garden Route and Cape Town. It is a great way of enjoying the great diversity in wildlife, cultures and regions.
It is for those who have some time available and who prefer driving to flying between regions. A flexible way in which to enjoy all that South Africa has to offer. |

Detailed Self Drive Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Kruger National Park
Clients are met upon arrival at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg by a representative of African Sky Safaris and Tours who presents them with their self drive tour itinerary, a map book of South Africa as well as a GPS on which a suggested route has been pre programmed. The locations of the suggested activities and places of interest we suggest in this itinerary are also logged in the GPS. At this time clients are also presented with accommodation and other relevant vouchers which they will require on their self drive tour.
The Representative spends an hour with guests going over the route and offering suggestions and advice. All members of the African Sky Team have years of experience in conducting tours and safaris in South and Southern Africa. He or she should be able to answer any questions clients might have regarding their self drive holiday. The representative then assists guests with collecting their rental car after which clients embark on their self drive holiday of South Africa.
Suggested Itinerary:
Guests can travel via Nelspruit and Hazyview to the World Renowned Kruger National Park where guests will arrive during the mid afternoon. Guests will have the opportunity to view wildlife by means of Safari's, walking trails, night drives or a boat safari down the Olifant's River.

Day 2-4: Kruger National Park
Suggested Itinerary:
Guests can get an early morning start and make their way to the northern part of the central Kruger National Park. The vegetation of this area is characterized by Mopani shrub. This plant is a favorite food source for the many Elephant in this part of Kruger and seeing these graceful beasts in large numbers is a near certainty in this part of the Park. Guests can drive to Letaba where they can relax before visiting the local Elephant Museum. The museum offers guests a unique insight into the behavior and habits of these largest of Africa's mammals. It is also home to the tusks of the "Magnificent Seven" (Largest Tuskers to have died in the Kruger National Park). Over the next few days guests can drive into different areas of the Kruger Park to experience the varied wildlife to be found in the Park. The legendary Big Five, regarded to be the most majestic and awe inspiring mammals to be found anywhere in the world, are sure to be amongst the day’s highlights. In addition to the lion, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard, the reserve is blessed with a rich diversity of antelope and other mammal species. |

Day 5: Mpumalanga Highlands
Suggested Itinerary:
Guests will leave the bush experience and make their way through the Mpumalanga Panoramic Route. Guests can visits the Blyde River Gorge dominated by the triplet peaks of the Three Rondavels and Bourke's Luck where the Unique Geological features of the potholes are admired. Gods Window is another possible attraction to visit on your drive to your next destination. God's Window is situated in a patch of indigenous forest where many flowering and aromatic plants flourish. A visit to the historical mining village of Pilgrims Rest affords guests the opportunity to experience the most perfect example in the world, of a mining town born during the excitement of an alluvial gold rush. Gold was discovered here in 1873 and the town was declared a national monument in 1986.Guests can enjoy a gold digging and panning demonstration before traveling to the overnight destination of Mount Sheba.

Day 6: Maputoland
Suggested Itinerary:
After breakfast guests will pass through the towns of Nelspruit, Barberton, Carolina, Ermelo, Piet Retief and Pongola en route to the overnight destination. Barberton was a boom town during the gold rush of the late 19th century. It was also home to the famous writer Percy Fitzpatrick whose epic tale " Jock of the Bushveld" has received international acclaim. A statue was erected in honor of this farmhouse dog in front of the town hall. Splendid scenery ranging from Savannah Grassland to forested hills and Banana Plantations brings the diversity of South Africa to life as the road meanders south to the rolling hills of Zululand. At the foot of the legendary Ghost Mountain in Klutzes, northern KwaZulu Natal lies your hotel Ghost Mountain Inn. Guests will overnight here.

Day 7-8: Zululand
Suggested Itinerary:
After breakfast guests take a drive to St Lucia where they can take a boat cruise on this coastal lagoon which has been declared a world heritage sight. The boat cruise will offer the opportunity of viewing the many hippo and crocodile which inhabit Lake St Lucia. The area is also a bird watchers paradise with 350 to 400 different species occurring in the area. The lake originated when a number of rivers combined their water to form a vast estuary system, roughly in the shape of the letter H and with an average depth of only one meter. Guests will now make their way inland to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. The game reserve was proclaimed in 1895 and its varied landscape, ranging from densely forested lowlands to open hill summits, provides a sanctuary for a considerable diversity of flora and fauna. Guests can indulge in game drives in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve. The different ecological areas, ranging from riverine brush to open savannah support an abundance of wildlife, most notably the Black and White Rhino. This Game Reserve played and is still playing an instrumental role in protecting both of these species from extinction. The current population of white Rhino which occur in South Africa has largely been re stocked from this area. The White Rhino is much larger than the Black, it is a grazer as opposed to the Black Rhino which is a browser. Sightings of other large game, most notably the Big Five is sure to make your stay spent on safari in Zululand an experience to be remembered. |

Day 9-10: Addo
Suggested Itinerary:
Guests will take a drive to Durban, drop off their rental vehicle and fly to Port Elizabeth where the vehicle for the next leg of their journey is collected.. From Port Elizabeth they can travel to the Addo National Park.Addo Elephant National Park is situated 72km by road from Port Elizabeth. Established in 1931 to save 11 Elephants on the brink of extinction, and now home to more than 350 of them, 280 Cape Buffalo, black Rhino, a range of Antelope species, as well as the rare flightless dung Beetle, Addo Elephant Elephant Park is a perfect destination for the adventurous outdoor and nature lover. You will reach the park during the late afternoon to enjoy a sunset over the Zuurberg Bushveld. Guests will enjoy the graceful elephant , who embody Africa in some mysterious way to the rare black rhino, much smaller than the white but reputed for it's temperament which could flare, sometimes seemingly unprovoked. The Big cats and a large number of different plains game species that once again roam free in this their ancestral grazing grounds afford a glimpse of Africa in all her glory.

Day 11-12: Garden Route
Suggested Itinerary:
From the grace of the wild beasts to the breathtaking beauty of the vegetation guests will now travel South to Knysna, the jewel of the garden route. Guests will drive through the Tsitsikamma National Park and make a quick stop at Storms River Mouth, to take a short walk to the famous Big Tree. A Yellowwood giant standing 36.6 meters high and is estimated to be +/- 800 years old. The scenic route then makes its way south en route to Natures Valley, which is reached after descending the Grootrivier Pass into the valley below where the town is located adjacent to the Grootrivier Lagoon. This river also marks the Western Boundary of the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve. Knysna will be reached during the mid afternoon. Guests will book into their accommodation at Villa Castollini. Villa Castollini is a magnificent Tuscan-style luxury retreat set at the top of Brenton-on-Hill, with incredible views of the Knysna Lagoon by day and an enchanted wonderland of lights by night. Knysna is primarily built on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary, fed by the Knysna River. The estuary opens to the ocean after passing between “The Heads”, and has become infamous due to the loss of boats and fishermen passing through their treacherous and unpredictable waters. Guests can board a ferry crossing the lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve. Featherbed Nature Reserve is a prime example of eco-tourism and in order to protect the splendor of the natural beauty, visitor numbers are limited. Another attraction is The Knysna Elephant Sanctuary which offers guests a closer look at the African Elephant by touching and feeding these gentle giants.

Day 13: Little Karoo
Suggested Itinerary:
Guests will now travel to George and turn off to the town of Oudtshoorn crossing the Outeniqua Mountains. The Outeniqua Mountain range is characterized by gentle southern sleeps and steep drops on the north side down to the low valley, the Little Karoo. Oudtshoorn is a large and modern town that relies mostly on farming and the ever-present ostrich industry. Guests can visit a local ostrich farm and during their visit they will learn more about the world’s largest bird which lays the largest egg and has the most beautiful feathers. After an opportunity to take part in an ostrich ride race, standing on their eggs and cuddling the chicks, guests can make their way to the Cango Caves. The extensive cave system of tunnels and chambers go on for over four kilometers of which only about a quarter of this is open to visitors. Another attraction worth a visit is the Cango Wildlife Ranch. The ranch is one of the leading cheetah breeders in South Africa where guests are permitted to enter a fenced area to interact with a tame Cheetah. Day 14-15: Winelands
Suggested Itinerary:
Traveling on Route 62 passing the towns of Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Barrydale, Ashton and Robertson before reaching Franschhoek guests can do some sight seeing en route. A few kilometers from Robertson is a turn off on a dirt road which takes you to the Sheilam Cactus Gardens, sometimes known as Little Mexico. It is home of about 3000 of the weirdest and most interesting exotic cactus plants. The wine industry in Robertson has grown from less than 25 cellars to more than 50 registered wine cellars as of today. There are a number of wine cellars that receive the highest awards both locally and internationally every year. Robertson wine cellars include Graham Beck, Springfield, Bon Cap, Majors Hill and the Excelsior Estate. Guest will finally reach the Rusthof in Franschhoek your home for the next two nights. You will be in the heart of the historic French Huguenot Village of Franschhoek, the “Food & Wine” capital of South Africa. The scenery is spectacular with magnificent mountains, endless vineyards and shady oak trees that dominate this beautiful valley. Guests can spend some time exploring the town before taking the opportunity to visit some of the well-known wine estates and sampling the fine wines they produce. |

Day 16-17: West Coast
Suggested Itinerary:
The west coast is a region with a unique charm and character. The area's population density is much lower than on the east coast primarily as a result of the low rainfall enjoyed by the area. The region is characterized by sparse vegetation and harsh rocky beaches which line the shores of the Atlantic Guests will travel north today to the town of Langebaan where they can visit the West Coast National Park with its rich diversity of bird species. Over 250 species have been recorded in the area. During spring the area is transformed into a flowering tapestry which creates a remarkable display. Guests will book into the Farmhouse overlooking the Langebaan Lagoon. Here guests can explore the lagoon, hike the neighboring Nature Reserve or simply relax and enjoy the sunset. The farm kitchen bakes fresh bread and other produce daily for the popular restaurant, that serves up hearty meals infused with West Coast culture. Paternoster is a quaint little coastal village a short drive up the coast. This part of the coast is rich in lobsters, perlemoen and other seafood. Three kilometers down the road from Paternoster guests will reach a light house Cape Colombine (named after the shipwreck which occurred here in 1929). The 9 million candle-power light house and radio beacon is a major navigational point for ships approaching the coast of Southern Africa from Europe and America. This stretch of coastline features many isolated coves and a one kilometer walk will bring guests to Titus Bay. Wild flowers, fresh air and a rugged seascape make up the beauty of this part of the world. |

Day 18-20: Cape Town
Suggested Itinerary:
After breakfast guests will travel south to Cape Town where they can explore the “Mother City’” of South Africa. Cape Town is renowned for its many attractions to mention a few :the oldest gardens in South Africa, namely the Company Gardens, established in early 1652 by Jan van Riebeeck as a vegetable garden originally closer to the coast. In a bid to plant in more fertile soil and on ground sheltered from the wind, he moved his garden with its northern boundary on Wale Street, and this is where it stands today. The large public park and botanical garden is home to a rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond and aviary, the Cape Town Castle and a short cable car ride will take guests to the top of Table Mountain. Guests will book into the Hotel. The Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel has an address on Kloof Street, a fashionable area known for its restaurants, shops and trendy café vibe. Table Mountain is the stunning backdrop and the famous Clifton beaches are a few minutes drive away.ther attractions for guests to enjoy is a visit to Robben Island a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment for nearly 400 years. It was here that rulers sent those they regarded as political troublemakers, social outcasts and the unwanted of society. The most well-known of the discarded or political prisoners was former president Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned by the former apartheid government. The island is a living museum reached by a return boat trip leaving from the waterfront (half an hour each way) to this World Heritage Site and a guided tour around the museum by an ex-inmate is an experience never to miss and the V&A Waterfront. |

Day 21: Departure
The morning can be spent at leisure before guests make their way to Cape Town International where they will board their international flight returning home after a memorable time in South Africa. The rental vehicle is dropped of at Cape Town International Airport. |
