Shakaland

Shakaland is a traditional Zulu homestead which means "Umuzi" in Zulu.  Shakaland is situated in the Entembeni hills close to Eshowe in KwaZulu Natal with a wide view of the bush land and the quiet Pobane Lake.  Shakaland represents King Shaka’s father, Senzangakhona, in the form of a kraal and is the oldest ‘Zulu Cultural Village’ in Zululand.

Shakaland is rife with tradition, and guests stay in fifty five traditional beehive huts with all the luxurious amenities as a normal hotel room, such as an en-suite bathroom as well as DSTV.  The huts also have spectacular views over the Zululand landscape.  There are Zulus living on the property in several Zulu round-huts making a circle around the cattle kraal.

The Zulu nation is filled with pride about their culture and traditions, and loves sharing it with visitors. You can book to take part in a guided tour of the Zulu village, where Chief Malinga and his family are staying in Zulu tradition to this day.  The Shakaland Hotel guests automatically take part in this fascinating tour, where the social system, the way of Zulu life, their traditional music and dances, their tribal wear and the meaning of their clothes and decorative ornaments, are explained. Their fighting techniques are demonstrated, attired in traditional wear.  Various crafts such as beadwork and pottery are also on display. Witness the traditional way of building a hut and even have the rare pleasure of meeting a traditional Sangoma or witchdoctor.

After enjoying the sites, join in and taste the Zulu beer, brewed the same way as hundreds of years ago.  For lunch,  enjoy a traditional meal prepared in a pot on an open fire.  The Shisa Nyama Restaurant  in Shakaland serves delicious meals at dinner time. Enjoy a sundowner from the U Kamba Bar, next to a crystal blue swimming pool, or even go for a swim in the moonlight, after a very informative day.
