In the heart of the Delta, in the Moremi Game Reserve, are hundreds of palm fringed islands, untouched by man and deserted. Located on one of these islands is Mombo tented safari camp. Because it is situated at the Northern most point of the reserve, the flood levels of the Okovango, affect it from the end of April, right through to September.
Mombo camp has been described as canvas ‘pavilions’ that melt into the background of the bush, becoming one with the surroundings. All the pavilions are raised off the ground and connected by wooden walkways. Solid wood paneled doors, lead into beautifully designed rooms, with private balconies. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, with an indoor and outdoor shower and a huge four-poster bed with a seating area. All rooms have a hallway into the room, which adds to the spaciousness. The veranda is connected to a walkway that takes you out over the flood plains to your private sala, where you can enjoy a lazy afternoon listening to the sounds of the bush.
Dining at the Mombo camp is considered very important and is always a delicious occasion. The dining area has a vast eucalyptus table with directors chairs all around, placed on a separate decking area, where meals may be enjoyed under the starry skies. The meals are served al fresco and the head chef is well known for serving seafood dishes that is as fresh as ever, in the middle of a landlocked country. The living room with its comfortable leather sofas also overlooks the plain. The lounge leads into the bar that leads onto the camps library, which is perfect for relaxing with a good book. To the left is the camps plunge pool, completely hidden away from the main area, and perfect for cooling off.
At Mombo camp, the atmosphere is always relaxed and laid back, and is perfect for a lazy getaway. However, they do offer morning and evening game drives for the visitors who enjoy some adventure while on holiday. The Mombo offers stunning game viewing all year round. |
