Located in the heart of the arid Namib Desert is Kulala Desert Lodge. This Lodge is conveniently close to the widely publicized red dunes of Sossusvlei and is part of the Kulala Wilderness Reserve. The Reserve comprises 37,000 hectare of the desert and is geared to preserve the wonderful heritage that only the Namib Desert offers. Research projects, such as one on small carnivores like the Bat eared fox and safeguarding of wildlife indigenous to the Namib, are done here. The buildings melt into the surrounds and become one with its environment, without compromising on style and comfort. There are 15 thatched uncanvassed “kulalas” (meaning ‘to sleep’ in Oshiwambo) built on wooden platforms to ensure great circulation of the cool desert air. Every Kulala is built with an en-suite bathroom and verandah and has a deck on the roof. Guests, who prefer to sleep underneath the stars, can sleep on the deck on clear cool nights. The main area of the camp is decorated in true North African style. This area also comprises of a comfortable lounge area, a bar and elegant dining area. The Kulala Desert Lodge also has a plunge pool, where guests can cool off during hot, desert days and a wrap around verandah. The verandah overlooks a waterhole, making it the perfect place at the lodge to view local wildlife. The Lodge offers early morning nature drives accompanied by a professional guide To view the stunning red dunes of Sossusvlei and surrounds, guests will be able to go on an early moring nature drive, accompanied by a professional guide. After very rare rainfalls, The Sossusvlei fills up, transforming from an enormous clay pan to an amazing turquoise lake. Both the drives and the hikes carry on through the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve, offering a glimpse of the unique countryside as well as some of the deserts inhabitants. Despite the low rainfall, quite a diversity of species and animals have adapted to desert life, and made it their home. At extra cost, guests may book an early morning balloon ride to view the desert from the sky. This is an amazing experience, drifting silently right across the dunes of the desert at first light. At the landing sight, a special champagne breakfast is served to the exhilarated travelers. |
