In the heart of the Zululand is the oldest game reserve in Africa. Here Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws. This game reserve is called the Hluhluwe Game Reserve and is home to the legendary ‘Big Five’. At the top of a forested hill in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, with excellent views of the surrounding landscape, is the Hilltop Camp. The Hilltop Camp is the oldest camp in Zululand, and was rebuilt in the early nineties. The Hilltop Camp has twenty-seven 2-bedded chalets and twenty 4-bedded chalets. The chalets without kitchens are situated close to the main reception area. Other chalets have kitchens for self-catering purposes and all have their own bathrooms. Rondavels are also available, and these units share an ablution block and kitchen. The more relaxed traveler, who prefers dining in style rather than preparing their own meal, the Mpunvane Restaurant and the Uzavolo bar are great places to visit for mouthwatering cuisine and drinks to remember. Most of the accommodation, however, has a designated barbeque/braai area, which is always a popular option. There is no need to worry if things were forgotten because the convenient store, located at the reception area, sells basic food and other supplies.
The main reception area of the Hilltop Camp includes an a-la-carte restaurant, a bar area, stylishly decorated and a comfortable lounge. In the bar and lounge area there are photos showcasing the history of Hluhluwe. The main building is situated in such a way that a full view of the beautiful surroundings is possible. Guests can buy a memorable from the gift shop, also located at the reception area. Go on a guided morning- or night game drive along the forest trail, or use your own vehicle to drive around in the reserve. Fill up your vehicle at the Gasoline station in the camp, before visiting one of the picnic sites for a quiet picnic in nature. Packed lunches may be ordered from the restaurant. During summer months when the water levels are sufficient, you can take a ride in a boat from Maphumulo picnic site. This ride lasts about 2 hours and brings you to the Hluhluwe Dam, where regular sightings of crocodile, hippo and other game are very likely. |
